What Is Leg Aesthetics?
Leg aesthetics refers to the surgery of shaping thin legs by placing silicone implants. By augmenting the calf muscle behind the lower leg, the leg is contoured.
In Which Cases Is a Leg Silicone Implant Preferred?
Augmenting the leg with a silicone implant is essentially no different from breast augmentation with silicone. However, the shape of the silicone is different. While breast silicone is round, shaped like the breast, calf implants are elongated, shaped like the calf muscle in the leg.
During the surgery, we place these implants inside the muscle, thus enlarging the calf muscle. Since the implant is placed within the muscle, it appears extremely natural. It cannot be noticed from the outside or felt by touching; it is not palpable from the outside.
How Is a Leg Implant Placed?
A calf implant is inserted through a 3-4 cm incision made behind the knee. Because we place the implants inside the calf muscle, they cannot be detected or felt from the outside.
Is a More Balanced and Shapely Appearance Possible with Leg Aesthetics?
In this surgery, we place silicone implants shaped like the calf muscle into the calf muscle. It’s similar to Russian matryoshka dolls. From the outside, you can’t tell how many dolls there are nested inside. Likewise, because the implant is shaped like the muscle and placed inside it, the result is very balanced and natural.
What Materials Are Used to Make Leg Silicone Implants?
There are 2 types of silicone leg implants:
1- Implants made entirely of solid silicone: These implants resemble an eraser. They are made of a single piece of silicone but are still soft enough. Their advantage is that they can be trimmed if necessary. For example, if the implant is too long for the patient’s leg, the tip can be cut to shorten it.
2- Implants filled with silicone gel: These implants have a silicone shell and are filled with silicone gel inside. They cannot be trimmed.
Can a Leg Implant Correct a Bowleg Problem?
Bowlegs are caused by weak leg muscles or curvature in the bones. Both situations can be improved with silicone implants. When the calf muscles are weak, it leads to what is popularly called “stick legs.” Augmenting the muscles with implants corrects this condition, closing the gap between the two legs. If the gap between the legs is due to a curvature in the bones, implants placed on the inner sides of the legs can camouflage this. The legs appear straight.
What Should Be Considered Before and After Leg Aesthetics Surgery?
No special preparation is required before surgery. However, it is crucial to inform the patient about postoperative care. The patient must be told what to do after surgery and when to come for a check-up. Recovery periods differ between patients who undergo surgery simply because they have thin legs and patients whose leg is thin due to polio. You should obtain detailed information from your doctor before the surgery.
Are Leg Silicone Implants Suitable for Different Body Types?
This surgery is not directly related to body structure. It can be performed on patients who want to thicken their legs, who have a gap between their legs, who have a thinner leg due to polio, or those engaged in bodybuilding who cannot develop their calf muscles.
How Long Does the Leg Aesthetics Procedure Take?
For many surgeons, this surgery takes a considerable amount of time. We have heard that some hospitals perform this surgery in 4-5 hours. This is because it is performed through a small incision behind the knee, and placing an implant inside the muscle through a small incision is not easy.
However, we perform this surgery using a surgical instrument designed and patented by Op. Dr. Oytun idil (the “idil calf dissector”). When done with this instrument, the entire operation for both legs, from start to the final stitch, takes about half an hour. In total, the surgery takes at most 45 minutes.
Does Leg Aesthetics Leave a Scar?
A thin scar about 3-4 cm long remains behind the knee toward the inner side. Over time, this scar fades and becomes barely noticeable.
How Durable Are Leg Silicone Implants?
These implants are different from breast implants. Unlike the changes that occur in the breasts over the years—such as sagging or atrophy due to breastfeeding—such changes do not occur in the legs. In the future, breasts may need implant replacements or lifts, but there is no such issue with the legs. Calf implants placed in the legs can remain for a lifetime.
Is Pain and Swelling Normal After Leg Aesthetics?
Because the implants are placed inside the muscle, the postoperative period can be painful. All surgeries involving implants placed inside the muscle are painful (for instance, silicone implant buttock augmentation). Therefore, we usually keep these patients in the hospital for one night after surgery. Strong pain relievers are administered intravenously so that the patient can have a comfortable night. The following morning, the patient can be discharged with oral pain medications. It is recommended that the patient rest at home after surgery.
How Many Days After Surgery Does the Patient Come for a Check-Up?
Patients discharged the morning after surgery rest at home for three days, only getting up to use the bathroom. Three days later, the patient returns to the clinic for a check-up, and the bandages on the legs are removed. From then on, the patient is allowed more mobility.
If the patient wishes, they can return to their hometown after the first check-up. For those residing in Istanbul, we schedule a second check-up three days after the first. At this check-up, we evaluate the patient’s walking improvement. It usually takes about 1 week to 10 days after surgery for the patient to walk normally.
